Margin is calculated as profit divided by selling price. Markup is profit divided by cost.
Margin vs. markup
  • Profit = Selling price − Cost.
  • Margin % = Profit ÷ Selling price × 100.
  • Markup % = Profit ÷ Cost × 100.

Example: If an item costs $25 and sells for $40:

  • Profit = $15
  • Margin = 15 ÷ 40 = 37.5%
  • Markup = 15 ÷ 25 = 60%

Many retailers talk about margin, while some wholesalers prefer markup. This calculator shows both so you can compare apples to apples.
