Markup is based on cost. Margin is based on selling price. They are related but not the same.
Understanding markup
  • Profit = Selling price − Cost.
  • Markup % = Profit ÷ Cost × 100.
  • Margin % = Profit ÷ Selling price × 100.

Example: If something costs $25 and you want a 60% markup:

  • Profit = 60% × 25 = $15
  • Selling price = 25 + 15 = $40
  • Margin = 15 ÷ 40 = 37.5%

Many wholesalers think in markup, while retailers often talk in margin. This calculator converts between them so you can compare pricing strategies.
